Feature: Upholstery Classes in Chicago

I’m a big fan of the Design*Sponge before + afters.

So I was thrilled when BackGarage reader Mary T. sent me these before and after photos of a chair she found at the Brown Elephant for $10, and her reupholstery job.

Wondering where you can learn to do the same thing?  Here are some places in Chicago that offer upholstery classes.  Surprisingly there aren’t that many.

The Needle Shop has several upholstery classes that center around one piece of furniture.  Most classes are under $100. Check the class schedule here.

Truman College offers a class called The Art of Upholstery for just $149 plus a $20 materials fee.  The next 10-week session begins March 25.

Vogue Fabrics also offers several home decor classes (pillows and drapes, mostly).  There’s also a throw pillow workshop at the Lillstreet Art Center, the next one-off class is Saturday May 30.  But neither institution offers upholstery classes.

I also checked Discovery Center — no upholstery class!

Looks like there’s a decided lack of hands-on upholstery instruction in Chicago.  Have you taken any upholstery classes in the city or suburbs?  Where?

Or do you have anything you’ve reupholstered all by your badass self?  Send me the pictures!
