Inspiration Folder: Igby Goes Down

All my favorite movies have one thing in common: they have a definite sense of time and place. Forget characters or story or anything else — my favorite part of any movie seems to be the set design and lighting. (And even though I haven’t touched a cigarette in two years, I seem to really like Salinger-influenced movies where people smoke a lot.) So it follows that I adore this movie: Igby Goes Down.

I recently re-watched it and was reminded of my favorite part of the film: the loft Igby squats in. Yeah, yeah, yeah: I love lofts. So typical. But here’s what I love about this loft: there’s almost nothing in it. Sure, it’s a movie set and these characters don’t really need a place to hide their magazine back issues and extra Kleenex — but the Igby loft shows us all how we can live large on less. As long as everything is on casters.

Easy Ikea lamp and just look at this hot room divider screen!  This looks like an easy DIY project — anyone want to write it?

Stacked full-length mirrors — nice idea.  Don’t you love it?

Stacked end tables?  It’s a little much…. but hey, if you can pull it off.

Remember when all you needed was a mattress, a hard wood floor and a sexy new sleeping partner?  Let’s ditch the fancy bedding and head back to the ground!

Hmmmm…. I *seriously* just bought an Ikea Expedit bookshelf on rolling casters off of Craigslist, unwittingly copying this movie.  I love it!
