Inspiration Folder: Dorm Life
Ah, remember sweet dorm life? Two of my favorite blogs are written by college students, 13 Years of Clutter and the Esthetic Scholastic, and they constantly remind me of what it was like to be newly liberated, not quite an adult, and totally temporary in my living situation.
As soon as I moved in to the residence center at Columbia College (yup, that’s me second to the left!), I had to make my room “mine.” And when you’re 18 there’s pretty much one way you know how to do that: with posters. It’s a step up from decorating the inside of a locker — you get a little more space to work with, but not much.
Since college I haven’t done much poster decorating (except this project). Now I’ve graduated to thrift store art. But I remember what it was like to decorate with limited resources in the area only around my bed. So I wonder…
- How would you decorate your place if your main goal was to reflect your personal taste in film and music?
- If you only had one room — the space around your bed — to decorate, what would stay and what would go?
- How did you decorate your dorm? Do you laugh at it today?
- Do you still have anything in your place that graced your dorm room walls?
- How would you organize if you had to keep everything with in 4 feet of your bed?
- And if you’re actually living in a dorm — how have you personalized it? What did you have to give up for space reasons? What do you refuse to part with?

Those dorm rooms are infinitely cooler than mine ever was. The only distinctive thing about mine was the big Clint Eastwood poster from “Fistful of Dollars.”
