Inspiration Folder: Back to School
My most recent acquisitions for the Etsy store have all had a Back to School theme recently. It was totally subconscious, but I’ve long loved the Back to School season and for many years have joked that “Back to School” is my favorite holiday.
I love Back to School for several reasons.
- I love office supplies. I always have. It started when I was little and my dad would take me to his office at the public library downtown. There I got to play in the huge industrial office supply room. Imagine rows of steel shelving with Pink Pearls, Sharpies, and Boston pencil sharpeners. So I embrace the one time of year when we’re allowed to purchase them without reserve.
- I love fall. I like having an excuse to crawl back into giant cowl necked sweaters and a pair of Doc Martens. (I realize who this makes me.)
- Most of all, I love reinvention. I like the idea that every September we get to renew promises to ourselves about what we’ll be like this year. I venture to say more of us, consciously or not, truly reinvent ourselves at Back to School time rather than New Years, especially if launching on a new project or starting a new job or program.
This Back to School I’m reinventing our living space, a few pieces at a time, to be slightly less focused on the MCM and Danish modern I’ve been obsessing over for so long and embracing my creepy chic side.
I want to reinvent the WALLS in my apartment, which have been too focused on thrift store art and bold mid-century prints. Instead I’d like to decorate with letterpress drawers (which kills me — my dad used to have hundreds of these in our back garage) and plates.
How are YOU reinventing yourself this Back to School season?

…it’s just the way… he leans…
back to school season has always been my favorite as well. i have trouble every year remembering that a new year actually starts in january instead of september. september always meant new pencils and lunchboxes and trapper keepers and contact paper book covers.
