When we bought our home on historic Logan Blvd. it was our dream home with leaded windows, original woodwork and clawfoot bathroom tub....tons of architectural interest. Looking back on the preservation of this home it surely is a modern miracle that it even stands today. With the surge of cookie cutter high rises and granite and brazilian cherry this and that.....it makes me realize that my dream home will continue to be my little gem in the city that is old, with crumbling plaster, small doorways and sad, drafty, original pully system windows.............but it will have charm.

When I was a kid, I always wanted to live in one of those little hobbit-type places built into the side of a hill so that grass was literally your roof. I still would probably be into that.

Nowadays, I'd love to live in an old apartment with lots of wrought iron and french doors and, quite possibly, white painted floors.

It's funny what you get used to, though. While not necessities at all, I've had really high ceilings and fireplaces in my last two living spaces. I'd miss those a lot if I had to give them up.

I also dreamed of living at Falling Water - still my IDEAL! I have several times over created my ideal lives. They seem to apply to time and place. Someone mentioned at my current incarnation that it is much like the place I just moved from. I think it couldn't be more different. What struck me about that comment is that I do create similar vignettes and furniture arrangements. I try to introduce new characters to the mix while keeping the functions consistent if they work for me.
Good question!

Oddly enough, I think I can see myself living in my Edgewater Glen 2 flat for quite a long time. I still feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to buy it. It's got a great layout with a huge sun porch and a partially finished basement (unfinished projects drive me nuts on one hand, but on the other hand, there's something interesting about it as well - pure potentiality as Deepak Chopra might say to describe our consciousness and which I say to describe a future bathroom). I love the neighborhood's tree-lined streets and proximity to the lake and to Andersonville. And I really like that my brother and his wife decided to move upstairs. It feels very old-fashioned and beautiful.

Prior to living here I wondered if I was the type who always wanted more. More space, more high-end finishes, a better zip code. But I guess as usual I was worried about nothing, because this seems just right.

Once upon a time I thought I had created my ideal space. I ordered faucets from England and light fixtures from Italy. The finished product was a far cry from the Barbie-dream-house-meets-Neuschwanstein Castle I dreamed of as a child. Instead it was a Martha Stewart inspired, Elle Decor wannabe designed to make me feel good about myself.

So I suppose one could say the ideal living space is something we are always striving for, and our idea of that is constantly evolving. For now, I am finding contentment with a rather crooked vintage rental curated with found objects, some expensive pieces from my past, and the people and animals who really make me feel complete.
