Store Profile: Urban Thrift

I received this letter from a reader recently:
Today I was so looking forward to my trip to The Ark Thrift Store on Lincoln north of Belmont. But… when I walked in I could tell everything had changed. The Ark Thrift Store is no longer there. Instead, Unique Thrift is there.
Do you have any scoop on this?
I am just so surprised because the Ark has been a fixture in that spot forever — at least as long as the last 15 years that I have been in Chicago.
The merchandise today did not seem half as good — even though it sounds like most of it was purchased with the lease from the Ark.
I always had such good finds at the Ark. I am disappointed. I am not really familiar with Unique but it sounds like its a favorite of your other readers. Thoughts?

After receiving Dara’s letter I decided to head down and check things out for myself. While I did not find a Unique Thrift Store in The Ark’s place, I did find something that was NOT The Ark.

However, it’s still massive: three floors. A basement full of books, first floor packed with furniture and housewares, and an upstairs with clothing. Each floor is larger than the first floor of most of the Unique Thrift branches I frequent. Still, it felt like much of the merchandise needed a turnover.
Though I still found a few gems.
I like the idea of this modern chrome and glass dining table — maybe with some antique Thonet chairs? Anyway, it was $150.
If you have a good eye, this is still a place to pick up decent furniture on the cheap. We’ll see how it starts to shape up in the coming months.

Hey! Is this a for profit thrift store like Unique or Village Thrift? I’ve got nothing against shopping at for profit Thrifts because most of them buy their stuff in bulk from Am-Vets, but please do not “donate” your goods to for profit thrift stores as the sign on the door indicates. That’s like making a “donation” to Walgreens, or 7-11, or Wal-Mart.
